The Cheltenham Gold Cup roll of honour
The Gold Cup roll of honour is the closest thing jump racing has to a hall of fame. The recent winners listed above are the modern entries; the race's full history stretches back to 1924 and contains some of the most celebrated names the sport has produced.
The legends of the Gold Cup
Golden Miller set the standard that still stands, winning five Gold Cups in a row in the 1930s. Three decades later Arkle, for many the greatest chaser ever to race, took three in the mid-1960s, winning by such distances that the handicap system had to be rewritten around him.
In the modern era, Best Mate captured the public imagination with three straight victories in the early 2000s, and Kauto Star wrote his own chapter by becoming the first horse to regain the Gold Cup, having lost his crown the year before.
A championship like no other
Every Gold Cup adds to that story. Because it is a weight-for-age championship run up the punishing Cheltenham hill, its winners are, by definition, the best staying chasers of their generation.
