How odds conversion works

The three ways of writing odds all describe the same thing, just in different languages:

  • Fractional (5/1) is the traditional British format: profit relative to stake. 5/1 wins £5 for every £1 staked, plus your stake back.
  • Decimal (6.0) is the total return per £1 staked, stake included. It is easier for accumulators and is standard on exchanges.
  • Implied probability (about 16.7% for 6.0) is the chance the price implies. It is the number that matters most for finding value.

To convert fractional to decimal, divide and add one. To get the implied probability, divide 1 by the decimal odds. This converter does all of it for you, and shows what a £10 bet would return.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert fractional odds to decimal?
Divide the fraction and add 1. So 5/1 becomes 5 ÷ 1 + 1 = 6.0, and 9/4 becomes 9 ÷ 4 + 1 = 3.25. The decimal figure already includes your stake, so a £1 bet at 6.0 returns £6 in total.
How do you convert decimal odds to a probability?
Divide 1 by the decimal odds and multiply by 100. So 4.0 implies 1 ÷ 4.0 = 0.25, or a 25% chance. This 'implied probability' is the key number for spotting value: compare it to the real chance.
What are implied probabilities used for?
Implied probability turns odds into a percentage chance, which lets you judge value. If you think a horse's true chance is higher than the price implies, the bet has value. It is the foundation of value betting.
